Why Novato

Some have asked me why I chose Novato, California for the town in my book. Well, for those who know me the answer is easy. From the age of ten, I grew up there and my children were born there.
As the Greyhound bus pulled into town, I honestly got goosebumps up and down my arms.  There was something in the air that made me know, I was home. Finally, after years of traveling from Nashville, Tennessee to San Diego, Lakeside and more. I just knew this was where I belonged.
When I stepped off the bus that warm day back in August of 1962, I fell in love. The smell of eucalyptus sailed through the air. I remember watching a man sweeping the sidewalk out front of a small corner store. The thing that touched me the most, was as I sat down on a bench near the old train station waiting for my mom to pick me up, he smiled and waved. I also saw a boy hanging out at the train station and yes, he really did make me blush and my mom honestly thought I had a fever, just  like in the book.
Little did I know I would meet my life long best friend and others who would remain planted in my heart forever and a day.
The things I remember so fondly were long, lazy days filled with walking on tin cans, saving enough money to go to Berkley Farms for a milkshake or ice cream. Those days also included, Western day weekend, cardboard sliding, and of course Novato Theater.
There were many teachers that touched my heart, but none as much as Mr. White, my sixth grade teacher. He planted seeds of knowledge and wisdom with his kind words and opened spirit. I’m not sure I’d be a writer today had it not been for him pushing me to reach for the stars. The second teacher ended up later on becoming his wife, Mrs. Scott. Her ability to read a story and bring it to life, made me dream of writing a book someday. Those two teachers were the biggest influences in my days of growing up.

Astonishing how a wonderful teacher can influence you so deeply.

Read first chapter of Seasons of Love and War.

Chapter One- Seasons of Love and War

A hush fell over the sweltering jungles as Kaylob Shawn O’Brien and Walt Shaffer anchored their bodies to the putrid ground alive with fire ants and spiders. Although the humid air grew thick with giant mosquitoes, Kaylob focused on worse threats like snakes, tarantulas, and the Viet Cong.

The moon cast a mellow glow over the landscape in contrast to the chaos below. The stench of sulfur brought Kaylob back to the moment. He looked over at Walt, his inseparable buddy since boot camp. He liked the guy. He was the brother Kaylob had never had.“Stick close, kid,” Kaylob whispered. “Don’t wanna get my ass shot trying to rescue you.”

“No way, man.” Shaffer placed his hand on Kaylob’s shoulder. “Gotta get you home to the redhead.”

Kaylob nodded and swatted away a bug. “Groovy, and we gotta get you home to your mama too. When’s she sending some more of those chocolate chip cookies?”

“Kiss my... ass.”They shared a quiet laugh but stopped abruptly as an eerie silence blanketed the air.

Kaylob raised his finger to his lips and stared at Shaffer. In the next instant the silence was shattered. Something exploded close to them. Dirt particles stung Kaylob’s face.

They needed to move.“Shaffer, follow me.”Kaylob moved through the bush, flinching as more grenades blasted around them. The deafening sounds sent mud and rock flying into the air.

He glanced back. No Shaffer. Son of a bitch. Where was he?Silhouettes of enemy soldiers appeared against the moon. They closed in as the smell of smoke, earth, and death enveloped him. Shit. He’d lost sight of Shaffer. A figure emerged out of the darkness, not more than a foot away.

“Shaffer, is that you?”No one answered. Then, a shot rang out and something warm hit his arm. A dark splotch of blood spread over his uniform. Kaylob watched Walt pause and saw his eyes widen. As if in slow motion, Walt crumpled and hit the ground.Damn it, no… Oh God, no...Kaylob dropped his M16 in the mud, pulled his buddy into his arms and saw his eyes roll back. Shaffer took a last rattling gasp. Tears slid down Kaylob’s face as he rocked his best friend.Shaffer's body was there, but he was gone. It was over.

“Walt, I’m so sorry.” Kaylob sobbed. “I swear I’m gonna kill those bastards who did this to you.” He kissed his friend’s head. “I love you, buddy. Your death won’t be in vain, I promise.”Kaylob felt like his heart was shattered, but he knew he had to pull it together. You had to stay focused in war or it could mean your life or the lives of others. No way would he let those bastards kill any more of his buddies.

He’d hated it when he’d been drafted, but now he felt dedicated to help his brothers-in-arms.The fighting continued all around him, but Kaylob barely heard anything as he laid Shaffer in the thick underbrush of the jungle, vowing to return. The Army didn’t leave its dead behind, and he sure as shit wasn’t going to leave his best friend.More bombs blasted fire, shrapnel, and dirt. Fury roared through him. He picked up his M16, his face dripping with sweat and tears as he fired his weapon into the night. Damn them, and damn this war.All he wanted in that moment was to settle the score, and he would find a way or die trying. As much as he loved Beth Ann, he couldn’t let his friend die in vain. He’d seen too much goddamn death.Once again he fired his gun into the night. “Walt, this is for you.”

Interview with Andrea-BarbosaEdit Entry

Taken on the Isle of Santorini

Tell us about yourself: Andrea-Barbosa
I’ve always been an avid reader and loved writing stories and poems. I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and like most Brazilians, I love soccer, and sunny, warm weather!
1. What are you working on right now?
I have a couple of projects; another novel that I have started a couple of years back and now I’m reinventing it, and a guide book about raising vegetarian kids.
2. How does your work differ from others in its genre?
I don’t like to categorize my writing in a particular genre. In poetry, I write mostly free verses and different themes. In prose, my novel falls under literary fiction, however, I used surrealism and less dialogue to present the characters and their goals, and an element of surprise at the end to wrap up the story in an unexpected twist.
3. Why do you write Poetry?
I find poetry easy to write. In a novel, you have to think the whole plot, plan the characters, and describe the scenes with more realism. In poetry, I find that I can be more creative and somewhat vague, making allusions and playing with the words without giving them a specific meaning, but more of a feeling. It’s like expressing yourself without giving away too many details, yet letting all your emotions show.
4. How does your writing process work?
I don’t have a method, a routine. When I feel like I need to create, I just start typing away.
5. What inspires you?
Our world. There are too many beautiful things in this world to be inspiration for tales and tales…
6. What age did you start?
I can’t remember specifically, but before I was a teenager I was already writing poems, short stories and make up magazines!
7. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I don’t like to visualize or plan anything that far in advance. I’m the kind of person that takes a day at a time. I’d love publish more books and become a popular writer, though.
8. Anything else you’d like to share?
Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog with this awesome interview. Here’s a poem from my latest book, Holes in Space – A Poetry Collection:

Poème
You are my poem,
versed in love,
rhymed with passion,
worded with desire.

You are my fragrance,
bathed in flowers,
mixed with the scent of the stars in bloom.

You are my dream,
embroidered in silk,
sewn with illusion,
dressed with kisses.

You are my one, my heart, my love,
my eternal, my life, my light.
You are my forever,
my everlasting poem, you.

Interview with Brad Montgomery- From The Sixties Girl by Vicky Staat

Let’s welcome Brad  Montgomery.

Brad in blog

1. Please tell us your full name age and occupation?
My name is Brad Montgomery and I’ll be 30 in March. I work for my father in our national restaurant business. I handle problems with restaurants and how they run. Travel is a big part of my job I’m good at it and I love it.
2. What can you share with us about yourself?
I work really hard and I play really hard. I love women and they seem to like me pretty well too. I love classic cars, especially my own 1965 Shelby Mustang that I rebuilt all by myself. I’m also lucky enough to have enough money to enjoy the things I love.
3. What was it that drew you to Kit?
Awe, so many things drew me to Kit. Did you know she’s a Car-hop? A darn good one too and cute enough that you would want her to wait on you and you alone. Man, she can stop your heart, she did mine.
4. Have you been in love before?
Love? No, I didn’t even think love really existed. Don’t get me wrong there were lots of women I enjoyed. I think they enjoyed me too, but for me it was all fun and games.
5. What is your favorite thing about Kit?
My favorite thing about Kit… Wow that’s tough because there is so much about Kit that’s special. However, if I have to choose, I would say that it’s the way she makes me feel. She doesn’t even know that the sight of her makes me happy and excited about each new day with her. Yeah, it’s the way she makes me feel.
6. Has anyone ever come between you and Kit or tried?
I can answer this question with one word. Claudette! A woman who lied, manipulated and conspired to break Kit and me up. Crazy is the only way to describe her.
7. If you could change something about Kit what would it be?
There are times with Kit that would make me nuts, because her way of handling a problem is to run away or not talk about it. Although, when I think about the two of us making up, I have to say even that it wasn’t bad at all.
8. How do you see your future with Kit?
I see us together, just being happy.
9. What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome?
Figuring out what my feelings for Kit were and admitting them.
10. What is the sweetest part of you and her together?
Discovering and enjoying our new found feeling for each other and chasing our dreams together.
11 Are there future stories with you and her together?
Yes, the book is called “Sixties Inspired” Hopefully coming soon.
Anything else you’d like to share about the sixties girl?
Just that Kit is The Sixties Girl, She will take you back to a time when love wasn’t so complicated and a lot more fun. Join Kit and me as we take you into our lives and give you a front row seat to our love story.

Seasons of Love and War: Big Easy Blog Tour

1.) What am I working on?  I’m working on two books. One is the prequel to Seasons of Love and War and the other is book three, the continuing story after December Road. Book three will have a bit of mystery and have come guessing games for you.

The prequel is called. The Journey of Elizabeth Ann Rose. The prequel will take you all the back to Kaylob and Beth Ann's childhood. This story takes you on an adventure with Beth Ann as she lives out of her car while her dad tries to become famous. They end up on a Indian Reservation in Southern California for almost one full year. From there her dad hits the road again and her life is filled with dirty hotel rooms and living in an old station wagon which she is fed  up with and voices her opinion to her parents.

Beth Ann's entire family has to endure this life style but there is no doubt that Beth Ann is the most verbose about it.

Stay tuned for snippets and teasers.

2.) How does my work differ from others in it’s genre? Well, you get to see the couples together for a longer period of time. There is still conflict but it’s not really the romance style. I would say it’s more of a family Saga with a beautiful love story that is part of that story.I have never wanted to be put in a box, so I tend to tear the box apart. I think it's hard to place my book in a certain genre because there are so many aspects of my storytelling. Love, family, war, suspense.

3.) Why do I write what I do? I write what I do because I love it. I don’t just have one type of writing that I do. I’m open with my first book being a memoir of an eating disorder that I went through. Two other books that are coming up are YA books. So for me personally, I have many different styles.

4.) How does my writing process work? I do an outline of the story, I write down each character and describe everything I can about them. What they like to eat, drink, wear. I usually dream about them and get to know them in dreamland.

I have been known to write different outcomes down and get Beta readers to tell me which outcome they like most. For me that helps a lot. For instance in book three I killed someone in a plane crash but when all was said and done, there was just too much more to his character and I couldn't do it. I'm not good at killing people. I might grow there but I'm not there yet.

December Road coming in Sept Oct. 2014

Next up on the tour will be these talented ladies who'll tell you next Monday, June 23rd , all about their own writing processes and their upcoming books.  They are both talented writers and stay tuned for some information on the stories they write.
